. . . FOLLOWER of CHRIST
His mission to bring sinners into favor with the God whose justice demanded death required a cross – that was the mission of Christ – to be born as a human and live on earth and then die to pay the penalty a righteous Judge requires. Accepting His death as a substitute for the punishment of OUR sins satisfied the required penalty.
So it was that Christ predicted His death and resurrection to His followers. This was necessary to pay for the sins of all who would accept His death as payment of their offenses.
“He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the religious leaders, and be killed and after three days rise again.” Mark 8:31 And Mark adds that He spoke these word openly.
When Peter took exception to his negative comments, Christ told him that often quoted, “Get thee behind me, Satan!”
When he had called the people to Himself, with his disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him (1) deny himself (2) take up his cross (3) follow Me.” Mark 8:34
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospels will save it.” Mark 8:35
“For will it profit a person who gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36
Jesus predicted His death and resurrection YET again:
For He taught His disciples and said to them,
“The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.” Mark 9:31
Mark elaborates in verse 32:
“ … they did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him.”
A third time Jesus told His followers He would be sacrificed.
“…they will mock Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” Mark 10:34
It is interesting that each time He spoke of His death, he mentioned He would rise again the third day.
Many hymns and gospel songs reveal the theme of following Christ and sharing His message.
All My Life Long I Had Panted [Satisfied]
All the Way My Savior Leads Me
Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
Anywhere With Jesus
Awake My Soul, Stretch Every Nerve
Constantly Abiding
Day By Day
Guide Me, Thou Great Jehovah
Footsteps of Jesus
God Leads Us Along
Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Heavenly Sunlight
He Leadeth Me
His Way with Thee
If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee
I Have Decided to Follow Jesus
I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go
Jesus Calls Us
Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken
Jesus Is Calling
Joy in Serving Jesus
Just a Closer Walk With Thee
Lead me to Calvary
Lead On, O King Eternal
Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?
O Jesus I Have Promised
O Master, Let Me Walk With thee
On Jordan’s Stormy Banks
Onward Christian Soldiers
O Spread the Tidings Round
Pass It On
Precious Promise
Ready
Rise Up. O Church [Men] of God
Safely Through Another Week
Simply Trusting
Soldiers of Christ, Arise
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus
Take the Name of Jesus With You
Trusting Jesus
Walk in the Light
We’re Marching to Zion
Where He Leads Me I Will Follow
Wherever He Leads I’ll Go
Who is on the Lord’s Side?
Whosoever Will
